The Spokane Bicycle Club (SBC) offers a three-day coordinated ride on various portions of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail (formerly known as the John Wayne Pioneer Trail, or the Iron Horse State Park Trail). Members only.

Dates: September 13th thru September 15th.  Members may ride on any or all days.

Brief Ride Summary: Each day’s ride will be ‘out and back’ along a different portion of the trail; rides will stage, start, and end at the same place.  Total out and back distances are scheduled for approximately 30 to 40 miles; riders may customize their ride length by turning back at any time.  Riders are responsible for transportation to each day’s staging area – ride sharing is encouraged.  It is envisioned riders will overnight in the Cle Elum or Easton areas – see below.

Trail Conditions and Equipment: Most of the trail is converted rail bed; short sections utilize public streets – trail slopes are between 0 and 3%.  Much of the trail is packed gravel, however some portions are looser than others.  Mountain, or fat tire, or bikes with gravel type tires (2” minimum) are recommended.  Road bikes are not appropriate.  These are trail rides; there will be no SAG support.  Sweep rider(s) will be provided with satellite phone(s).  The trail is in good condition; however, riders are encouraged to bring minor bike tools and tire repair equipment.  NOTE: Google may still list trailheads as part of the Iron Horse State Park.

    • September 13, Day One (Friday): Travel to Lake Easton State Park or the Easton Trailhead; riders will assemble for the briefing and start of the ride at the Easton Trailhead at 10 AM (may vary). Ride to the Hyak Trailhead (Snoqualmie Pass) and back – 18 miles each way; 36 miles total.  The ride out is a gradual climb to Keechelus Lake (11 miles) then level to Hyak Trailhead (7 miles); the ride back is the reverse.
    • September 14, Day Two (Saturday): Travel to Rattlesnake Lake Recreation Area (42 miles west of Easton, 55 miles from Cle Elum); riders will assemble for the briefing and start of the ride at the Palouse to Cascade Trailhead parking lot at 10 AM.  Ride to the west side of the Snoqualmie Pass tunnel and back – 19 miles each way; 38 miles total.  The ride out is a gradual climb; the ride back is the reverse.  A ride through the 2.25-mile-long tunnel (and back) is optional but will not be covered by the Sweep Rider.  At least one headlight is required – warm clothing and a spare light is recommended.
    • September 15, Day Three (Sunday): Travel to Kiwanis Park in Ellensburg, WA (38 miles east of Easton, 25 miles from Cle Elum); meet in the Kiwanis Park parking lot off W 14th Ave at 10 AM.  Ride 21 miles up the trail (west) to Lower Peoh Point Rd (much of it along the Yakima River) and back – 21 miles each way; 42 miles total.  The ride out is a gradual climb; the ride back is the reverse.

Accommodations: Camping is available at Lake Easton State Park.  A Washington State Discovery Permit is required.  Campsites should be reserved as early as practical.  Campsite accommodations vary but may accommodate up to three tents so campsites may be coordinated and shared to reduce costs. Campsites may be reserved here: https://washington.goingtocamp.com/ - make sure you select “Lake Easton State Park”. Suggest we group ourselves around the restroom area for convenience in the standard campground area (campsites 95 – 109 in the ‘Standard Sites’ camping area unless you have a rig that requires hookups).  If you don’t wish to camp, there are a wide variety of motels and Bed and Breakfast type accommodations are available in Cle Elum, Easton (limited), and Ellensburg.

Meals: Meals, lunches, and riding snacks are up to the individual.  There are many restaurants in the Cle Elum and Ellensburg areas.  There is a large Safeway in Cle Elum, not much in Easton.  A social get together is planned for Saturday evening – preliminary plans are for Smokey’s BBQ located in the old train station at the Cle Elum Iron Horse State Park trailhead.  Dinners will be ordered off the menu and are the responsibility of each individual.

Register by going to the Spokane Bicycle Club website, under ‘Events’.

Cost: $25 per person until August 31; $35 per person after that. Refundable up to Aug 31, 2019; Non-refundable if cancellation is Sept 1st or later. Registration closes Sept. 8th.
